Pictures are a bit grainy, especially the night time scenes, but that is the way they were broadcast, not my conversion. I don't know why the broadcast was so poor, it was almost as though the TV station downloaded a really bad copy and played it. -- Last edit: 2008-07-07 23:34:04 |

The mini-series dealt with the events of Sydney Gangland Wars of the 1980s and the career of Arthur "Neddy" Smith and his relationship with Detective Sergeant Roger Rogerson and other corrupt detectives within the New South Wales Police Service. The Sydney Gangland War was one of Australia's first series of murders and disappearances and attempted murders of well known figures and associates. Warren Lanfranchi - Known as Frenchie; standover man, drug dealer and associate of Arthur "Neddy" Smith, was under investigation for pulling a firearm on a police officer, shot by NSW Police Detective Sergeant Roger Rogerson at Dangar Place in Chippendale, NSW on the afternoon of the 27th June 1981. Brian Alexander - Former lawyer and associate of Griffith-based Calabrian Mafia boss, Robert "Aussie Bob" Trimbole and Sydney-based New Zealand drug trafficker and mastermind of the Mr. Asia Drug Syndicate, Terrence "Kiwi Terry" Clark, had ties to corrupt detectives and was scheduled to give evidence at the Steward Royal Commission, disappeared from his home on the morning of the 21st December 1981. It is believed that Alexander was invited onto Neddy Smith's boat and was dumped at sea, Alexander's car was found parked at the Gap on the 14th January 1982. Terence Basham - Drug dealer and former Painter and Docker, was involved in a drug importation ring with drug traffickers, Bruce "Snapper" Cornwell and Barry Bull, shot with his partner, Susan Smith at their farmhouse in Murwillumbah, NSW on the morning of the 13th August 1982. It was believed that Basham had a falling out with Cornwell and Bull that resulted in Basham bashing Bull, in revenge, Cornwell and Bull hired Melbourne hitman; Christopher Flannery and his associate, Lawrence Prendergast to murder Basham. The killers left the couple's two-year daughter alive with her parents' bodies. Susan Smith - Basham's partner, shot with her partner, Terence Basham to eliminate the witness to Basham's murder. Leslie Cole - Known as Johnny Cole; former Painter and Docker, was working for gangland boss and associate of Lenny McPherson and George Freeman, Fredrick "Paddles" Anderson and had survived a previous attempt on his life, shot in the garage of his home at Kyle Bay, NSW on the afternoon of the 10th November 1982. Lewton Shu - Drug dealer, was on bail for drug trafficking with his associates, James Murray and Murray's girlfriend, Jennifer Anne Lewis, shot at the Royal National Park near Waterfall, NSW in January 1983. Harvey Jones - Used car salesman, drug dealer, thief, brothel owner and associate of Neddy Smith, was charged with theft of gold bullion and was under investigation for a incident where fired his revolver in front of everyone into the ceiling of the Sheila's Tavern in North Sydney, shot by Neddy Smith at Botany Bay Beach on the night of the 15th July 1983. It was believed that Jones met with Smith to arrange to pay off $60,000 Smith's associate, NSW Detective Sergeant Rogerson to have Jones's charges dropped. Edward Cavanagh - Known as Bill Cavanagh; trucking company owner, was suspected of having ties to Griffith Calabrian boss, Robert Trimbole and several members of the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta and was suspected of using his company as a front for the marijuana trade between Sydney and Melbourne, shot with his partner, Carmelita Lee by Lindsay Rose in the bedroom of their home at Hoxton Park, NSW on the night of the 20th January 1984. Carmelita Lee - Partner of Bill Cavanagh, shot with Cavanagh to eliminate the witness to Cavanagh's murder. George Brown - Racehorse trainer, bashed and burnt to death in his green Ford Falcon XA sedan at Bulli Pass near Bulli, NSW on the night of the 2nd April 1984. Brown was last seen leaving the stables at Rosebery for his house at Kensington, it is suspected that Brown was murdered by members of a race fixing ring after one of Brown's horses had lost at race meeting in Brisbane on the 31st March 1984. It has been suspected to be linked to the Fine Cotton Ring-in scam as one of the trainers, Hayden Haitana (who was involved in the Fine Cotton Ring-in) stated that he was threaten by one of the suspected fixers who stated that Haitana "would end up like the trainer Brown" if he didn't get involved in the Fine Cotton scam. Michael Drury - NSW Police Drug Squad Detective Sergeant, had been involved in a joint New South Wales-Victoria Police Drug Operation and testified at the hearing of former Painter and Docker and drug dealer, Alan William who was arrested in the operation, shot through the kitchen window of his family home at Chatswood, NSW on the night of 6th June 1984. Drury survived the shooting, in a statement, Williams stated that he through Rogerson tried to bribe Drury to have the charges dismissed, but after Drury rejected numerous briberies attempts, Williams agree to pay Rogerson and Flannery $50,000 to have Drury killed. Danny Chubb - Known as the Brain; drug dealer, had been involved in various heroin and marijuana importation rings and had been seen flashing large sums of cash at various points, shot outside his mother's house in Miller's Point, NSW on the afternoon of the 8th November 1984. Chubb had arrived at his mother's house and was getting of his green Jaguar with a package of fish and chips for his mother's lunch when two gunmen on a motorbike rode up to Chubb and shot him, in his autobiography, Neddy Smith stated that Chubb's killer were hired by Chubb's former associates. Stanley Wong - Chinese restaurateur, racehorse owner and associate of George Freeman, was suspected of being involved in the illegal morphine trade, slashed in the throat with his wife, Yung Po Chin and their housekeeper, Ah Ling Wong by Chinese immigrant, Wee Lam Choo at their house in Maroubra, NSW on the night of the 3rd January 1985. Yung Po Chin Wong - Wong's wife, slashed with her husband and housekeeper, was saved by the head of the heart transplant team at St. Vincent Hospital, Dr. Victor Chang (who himself was later murdered during a failed kidnapping attempt in Mosman on the morning of the 4th July 1991). Ah Ling Wong - The Wong Family housekeeper, slashed with Stanley and Yung Po Chin Wong, survived the attack. Michael Sayers - Known as Melbourne Mick Sayers; racing identity and associate of Chris Flannery, was involved in the Fine Cotton Racing Scam, shot by two gunmen outside his home in Bronte, NSW Sayers on the night of the 16th February 1985. it was believed that known drug figure, Barry McCann was behind Sayers' murder in revenge for being ripped off by Sayer. Thomas Domican - Known as Tough Tom and Tommy; Irish-born British standover man and associate of gang leader; Barry McCann, was involved in a gang feud with rival standover man and hitman, Chris Flannery over George Freeman's territory and was suspected of involvement in the attempted murder of Flannery who was shot at along with his family on the 27th January 1985, shot at by Flannery outside the Kingsgrove Police Station at Kingsgrove, NSW on the night of the 12th April 1985. Anthony Eustace - Known as Tony Anderson, Spaghetti Tony and Spaghetti; British drug dealer and associate of Chris Flannery, shot six times in back by Flannery outside the Airport Hilton at North Arncliffe on the night of the 23rd April 1985. Eustace initially survived the shooting and was rushed to hospital where he told the police to "f**k off" when they asked who shot him and later died of his wounds. Christopher Flannery - Known as Rent-a-Kill; Melbourne hitman, was working as a bodyguard for Racing Identity and SP Bookmaker, George Freeman and had become embroiled in feuds with gangsters, Thomas Domican and Barry McCann and started to shoot at anyone who were associates of Domican or McCann, disappeared from outside his family apartment in Inner Sydney, on the morning of the 9th May 1985. On the morning of his disappearance, Flannery received a phone call from George Freeman asking to meet him, when Flannery was unable to start his car, Flannery went to catch a taxi and had vanished, Smith stated that he had seen Flannery getting into a car with detectives who allegedly drove Flannery to Freeman's home where he was murdered before his body was dumped in the Bay. Sallie-Anne Huckstepp - Prostitute, heroin addict and former girlfriend of Warren Lanfranchi, had named Rogerson and several other detectives for being involved in corruption including the shooting death of Lanfranchi, drowned in Busby Pond at Centennial Park, Sydney on the night of the 6th February 1986. Neddy Smith was charged with Huckstepp's murder in 1999, but was acquitted on a lack of evidence. Arthur Smith - Known as Neddy; armed robber, drug dealer, murderer and associate of NSW Police Detective Sergeant Roger Rogerson, was named as an informant in the newspapers, run down by McCann's associate, Terry Ball outside Iron Duke Hotel on the afternoon of the 2nd April 1986, Smith survived the attempt. Mark Johnston - Known as Playboy Punter; former male model and drug dealer, was a major drug supplier in the Sydney Underworld, garroted by Smith at the home of Smith's lawyer, Graham "Val" Bellamy in Dover's Height, NSW on the night of the 1st September 1986. Johnston's skeletal remains was found buried at Botany Bay Beach in October 2007, it was believed that Johnston's murder was over a debt. Barry Croft - Known as Sugar; drug dealer and associate of Barry McCann, was a major heroin supplier to George Freeman and was involved in a drug ring with McCann, shot as he was sitting in his Ford Fairlane at the intersection of City Road and Myrtle Street in Annandale, NSW on the night of the 6th August 1987, it is believed that Croft's murderers wanted to deal with McCann directly and they killed Croft to cut out him out of the drug ring. Barry McCann - Drug dealer and gang boss, ran the Lansdowne Hotel that was an hangout for McCann's gang and was involved in a heroin deal with former Marrickville Council member, George Savvas is shot by Savvas at H.J. Mahoney Park on Wharf Street in Marrickville on the night of the 27th December 1987. According to Neddy Smith, McCann wanted to move in on the Sydney Gambling Trade ran by Freeman's associate; Lenny McPherson, it is believed that the murder was the result of falling out after Savvas had undercut McCann's normal distribution price by selling the heroin in Sydney, not Melbourne as was agreed upon by Savvas and McCann and the fact that two suitcases of heroin disappeared. In 1988, Savvas was charged McCann's murder but was acquitted, he was later charged and convicted of heroin trafficking in and sentenced to 25 years imprisonment, on the 7th March 1994, Savvas was sentenced to a further 18 years imprisonment for masterminding a conspiracy to import 40kg of cocaine from South America. Bruce Sandery - Drug dealer and armed robber, ran a major heroin distribution ring in South Australia and had been importing heroin from NSW into South Australia as well as named in the disappearances and suspected murders of his associate, Roy Naylor and his wife, Sonya in June 1984, disappeared from the Zetland Hotel at Zetland, NSW on the night of the 12th April 1988.
